“Detka” Canal Museum

By choosing to come to Lodz, visitors should remember that they will not only discover textile factories and beautiful Art Nouveau buildings and palaces, as described in the “The Promised Land” by Wladyslaw Reymont but also a unique monument of technology, that is considered important throughout Poland.

In 1926, during the construction of urban water supply systems, an underground oval water tank with a capacity of about 300m³ was built according to the specification of William Heerlein Lindley, in order to flush the city sewerage system. Made of specially-fired red brick, has survived till today in excellent condition. Due to advances in technology, it has lost its functional properties and becoming the first water supply tunnel to be opened to the public in Poland. The exhibition in the canal, which today is part of the City of Lodz Museum, was prepared by renowned artist Robert Kusmirowski.
